Thermite Reaction
One of the reactions that I love is the Thermite reaction.
Here we combine 15g iron oxide and 5g aluminium powder, to start the reaction magnesium is lit. Once lit the reaction soon takes place.
To take this into context of the classroom, I use keywords such as Exothermic, and we determine key characteristics of what and exothermic reaction consistent of. Since I demonstrated this reaction to year 9s, we talked about the formation of reaction including how to write a reaction equation. I often don't tell students what is going to happen, but tell them to step back and record if they would like to.
