Lab Experiment: What are the properties of a Solid and Liquid?
Background:
A common science topic discussed with year 8s is determining what properties make up a solid and a liquid. To further solidify their knowledge I had students perform an experiment where they add water to corn starch. This experiment tests the boundaries of what makes up a solid or liquid.
Method:
Students added 250mL of water to 250 mL of cord starch in a plastic beaker. Once the mixture started to take hold, they added Food coloring (optional).
Outcome:
Students were able to predict when the substance would act like a solid and when it will act as a liquid. The link below is an example of one of my students explaining what he has learnt.
