Novel Study Projects

While covering english for a few weeks, students and I covered three different books. One grade 8 class explored themes from The Outsiders, while the other covered themes from The Giver. The Grade 9 class worked through the Novel called The Fault in Our Stars.

Grade 8s

After exploring major and minor themes within The Giver, students for their final project had to make a board game which connected to the themes in the book. Furthermore, they had to include characters from the book.

Inspired by the popular boardgame cafes located in calgary, we spent time playing the games drinking Tea and Hot chocolate. The video below is an explanation of one group's board game.

The OutSiders

With the other grade 8 class, we explored themes in the book called The Outsiders. Two of the major themes that we discussed was the societal differences between the main groups in the book and the laws surrounding gun violence.

The image to the right, depicts an activity where students were asked to find quotes and write them under the theme listed on the whiteboard.

The Fault in Our stars

While teaching grade 9, we worked through the book called; The Fault in Our Stars. In addition to identifying the major themes in the novel, students were asked to find quotes that relate to the themes. This acted as the scaffold for students to be able to integrate quotes in their essays.
