Functional Writing
A component of the grade 6 Provincial Tests is functional writing. Grade 6 students are required to write a newspaper article. Upon 1st exposure of this I had students look at newspaper articles. It was their job to highlight the 5Ws and 1H using different colored pencils.
In doing so students were exposed to the key elements in writing a article. This included the main headline, secondary headline along with other key parts of information. With this information we also talked about the different types of leads an article can have to “sell” the information to the reader. This included:
